Kairouan
Kairouan is the fourth most holy city in the Islamic world - after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. Enclosed by imposing walls and monumental gates, its medina houses numerous mosques and sacred buildings, including the great mosque of Okba Ibn Nafaa, masterpiece of Islamic architecture, as well as a wealth of shops selling copper, brass, leather… and of course carpets.
Kairouan is indeed the oldest and most renowned carpet-making center in Tunisia.
Kairouan is the first historical center of North Africa. It was a cultural, spiritual and intellectual center where medicine, astronomy geometry and arithmetic were studied. Kairouan magnificence reached its apogee during the Aghlabit period in the XI th century.
