| Day 5: Ain Draham/Tabarka After breakfast, morning walk to the village of Beni Mtir. The wooded and flower-decked foothills of Ain Draham have more than a hint of unspoiled Provence. This day is dedicated to walking/trekking in the forests and mountains of northwestern Tunisia (difficulty=moderate). We will be accompanied throughout the day by a local guide. Lunch will be in the form of a picnic in the middle of the Ain Draham or Tabarka forest. Depart to the Tabarka forest (20mn away from Ain Draham), above the Ras El Rajel area where in between the trees, you can enjoy the superb blue sea of the Mediterranean (difficulty=easy). Dinner in a local restaurant in Tabarka. Overnight in Ain Draham. Day 6 : Kairouan Depart to Kairouan. Check in and lunch at the Kasbah hotel 5* that lies at the heart of the holy city of Kairouan. This hotel, built and managed by Promotel, our parent company, with a luxurious inside and a sober outlook, merges harmoniously into the Arab-Islamic architecture of the city of Kairouan. Visit the Sidi Sahbi mosque of the Barbier and the Bassin des Aghlabites, pools built by the Aghlabites to bring water to the town which represents one of the most important pieces of hydraulic engineering of the Middle Ages. Our guide will be the conservator of the Medina of Kairouan. Departure to Jouaouda, Visit a traditional maasra where olive oil is produced. Prepare your dinner with women in Al Jouaouda to experience how traditional meals are prepared in the pure tradition of the Tunisian gastronomy. Original Dinner under tents in el Jouaouda in a plantation of olive trees and oranges. Overnight in Kairouan. Day 7: El Djem After breakfast, continue visiting Kairouan.Visit the 9th century great mosque of Oqba ibn Nafi, an important reference point in Islam and Islamic architecture. Continue to the Raqqada and its museum and Sidi Amor Abada. Visit the souks, taste the traditional local pastry stuffed with dates called makroudh, and learn about the traditional savoir-faire of women making rugs. Walk back to the hotel. After lunch in la Kasbah, departure to El Djem to visit the spectacular amphitheatre which is the second largest in the world only to Rome’s and dates from 238AD. Visit the museum and the excavations extending behind the museum where beautiful mosaics have been found. Return to Kairouan. Dinner at la Kasbah hotel. Enjoy a night walk by the great mosque to view the spectacle "sound and lights". Overnight in Kairouan Day 8: Tozeur After Breakfast, 4X4 departure to Tozeur. Check in at and lunch at Dar Cheraiet Hotel 5*. Free rest of the afternoon with suggested visit to the museum in Dar Cheraiet: The museum, partially outdoor, is laid out like an amusement park and features luxurious decorations and gardens with the most representative scenes of North African life. Approximately two hours before sunset, departure to Ong Jmel where the George Lucas' movie Star Wars was filmed. The afternoon will finish with a cocktail or tea as the sunsets over the dunes. Dinner under Berber tents around a giant fire, you will appreciate the famous "agneau a la gargoulette", portions of shoulder meat that are rubbed with a sauce of olive oil, salt, a sprig of mint, a touch of cayenne pepper and turmeric and baked underground in claypots, bread making in clay ovens and decorating of hands with Henna as well as nomads folklore. Overnight in Tozeur. Day 9: Metlaoui/Mountain Oases After breakfast, 4X4 departure to Metlaoui. Visit the Selja gorges with the Red Lizard Train: the Red Lizard, the train belonging to the Bey of Tunisia himself is part of the colonial spirit. With six wagons, including one used by the Bey, the train takes you to discover the famous and otherwise inaccessible Selja gorges. Continue by 4X4 to Tamerza. Lunch at the Tamerza palace overlooking the village of Tamerza. Visit of the mountain oases, Mides canyon (The village of Mides appears as if suspended above a deep gorge, with walls surrounding it on three sides, the fourth used to be a high barrier, which sheltered the village from raiders), Tamerza 's natural water cascades that irrigate the date palmiers (Tamerza is a verdant mountain oasis overlooking a drop of hundreds of meters to the Oued El Khanga ravine and a superb waterfall), Chebika, one of the most beautiful oasis in Tunisia where palm trees grow from the springs and waterfalls. Return to Tozeur. Dinner in local restaurant in Tozeur featuring Tunisian’s Southern specialties. Overnight in Tozeur |
